Well, it's been quite awhile, hasn't it? Recently, ModStylist Amy from ModCloth contacted me and asked if I would like to participate in their Uniquely You campaign. I've been meaning to get back to the blog, and to check out Polyvore (would you believe this is my first attempt?), plus I adore ModCloth - so I was glad to accept. The challenge was to create an outfit based around their gorgeous When The Night Comes Dress using items from ModCloth. Additionally, everything shown is a part of their plus size collection! They've been very focused on improving their plus options as of late, which is so important because I know my fashion-loving plus size girlfriends haven't had a lot of choice. When I go shopping with my girls, it would be nice if they could have as many clothing options as I do as a straight size lady. The industry has a long way to go, but it's nice to see ModCloth making serious strides in the right direction, blazing a trail.

Anyway, my outfit is pictured above! I was inspired by upcoming holiday parties and, well, cats. Duh. Because who isn't?

...that I haven't forgotten about my blog! And I still really love street festivals. The last post was a flashback to Roycroft Festival 2011, and this post zaps forward to Roycroft Festival 2012, which was just last weekend! But before I yammer on about the event, let's get those outfit details out of the way first:

50s vintage crop top!!!
Modcloth shorts (old)
70s vintage purse, my ultimate favorite
80s vintage sunnies
Keds
Big toothy grin

The crop top is something I was extra excited and proud to find. It was in the children's section of one of my favorite vintage haunts and it cost me $3. Since it's so short and has a label that says "Jrs." on it, it was mistaken for a little girl's blouse. But I noticed the bust darts and adult-size shoulder measurement and knew I had to make it mine, especially since this type of vintage separate is so hard to find. I've only ever found one other cropped blouse (from the 40s), and it was way too busty for me. This one fits perfectly! Also, these shorts used to sit lower on my hips, but I had them tailored to sit higher up once I realized how amazing they would look with the blouse. I liked them a lot before, but I like them much better now!

Also, I was taught never to sport a bare midriff, so I was a bit self-conscious about trying out this look at first. But after many positive comments (including from my grandmother!), I eased into it and can't wait to try other combinations. My favorite comment was from an oldish man who said my outfit reminded him of something his mother would wear in the 40s ("and that tells you how old I am, har har!").

And now for some cute things I saw at the fair...

Baby alpaca!!!!! Here he is with his mother, so you can have an idea of the cute tinyness:

This one lady had a couple of boxes of beautiful vintage textile scraps. I didn't know what I'd do with any of them, but I did find a few little treasures tucked in there that I'll share later. I do wish I'd taken a little more time to look through everything; there was a lot!

Can't go wrong with a colorful box o' bakelite. Wish it were all mine...

I bought this hat at a local shop in town using a gift card from my mom (thanks, Mom!).
It seems someone has fallen behind on her blogging, tsk tsk. I just want to be a sponge in the wintertime, soaking up what the internet has to offer instead of contributing anything. The sun has been peeking out lately, however, and with it come hints of inspiration. To get back in the swing of things, I'll be posting sets of photos taken in 2011 that have fallen by the wayside. These particular pics are from the Roycroft Festival all the way back in June, which, as I've mentioned before, is one of my favorite events of the year. It's hard to believe that in just a few short months, it'll be time to hit up the festival again!

Checking out a 50s black cotton voile cocktail dress by Gay Gibson. Only $25 and in my size - duh, I bought it.

This was the best antique/vintage jewelry booth! I really hope this lady sets up at the festival again this year. I'm a sucker for figural jewelry in particular, and she had it in spades. Here I'm inspecting a WWII-era sailor pin. I left it behind, but walked away with green bakelite hoop earrings and this celluloid scottie dog charm bracelet (thanks, Mama Pierro)!

These amazing vintage sunglasses were also at the booth. I thought they were pretty silly at the time, and I still do, but looking at this photo really makes me wish I had bought them! Maybe this year, if I'm lucky...

Realllllly pretty embroidered pillow from my dreams, left behind due to lack of space (and probably a hefty price tag).

Had to make time for a cupcake; this S'mores one was unfortunately not as good as it looked.

After the festival, I had to hit up The Dress Shop, a favorite local boutique with tons of gorgeous vintage upstairs. Just look at all those pretty dresses! It's also the headquarters of Wallflower Vintage. I tried on tons of clothes but didn't have any luck that day; the shop assistant must have loved me, ha ha... sometimes that happens, though.

Thanks for reading! I'll try to post again soon!Aliciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01595398931669858850noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978411828609251758.post-30232821198560258992011-12-07T15:21:00.000-08:002011-12-07T15:36:06.376-08:00Brunching and Munching

We were lucky to have pretty amazing weather this fall - it's only just beginning to get wintery. These photos are from a couple of weeks ago, when Dave & I went out for delicious brunch with his sister and her husband. It was so warm, I didn't even need my sweater! All the better to show off this sweet little cat-print dress that I picked up using a gift card to H&M that I won on La Fille D'Or's blog - thanks again, Suzz! Just hanging in front of an industrial wall, as fashion bloggers do. All bundled up for the fall chill. I've been wearing this jacket and these gloves all season long - they're my autumn workhorses, for sure. I forgot exactly what we did this day, but I do remember going to the bargain book outlet and snagging a couple of sweet deals, including a vintage, Bradley-style, Japanese pose doll. I forgot to take a photo of her; she has pretty violet hair and looks amazing sitting next to my kitschy poodle. Actually, Dave bought her for me, because he's sweet like that. I also bought a book about famous Siamese twins Chang and Eng, and a trashy novel about beautiful, tortured ballerinas. All in all, a pretty good haul, I think.

Trench: Priorities
Dress: Urban Outfitters, so old
Wool tights: J. I'm so excited I hardly know what to say! I've been approached by several different magazines and companies while running this blog, but nothing's really grabbed me. If I don't believe in something, I don't post about it. When Shabby Apple contacted me to do a giveway, however, I jumped at the chance to pick out a pretty dress for you! It's not about to become giveaway central over here, but I've long been a fan of their vintage-inspired women's dresses, so I just couldn't resist. Please allow me to show some of my personal faves, so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about. If you want to know more about one of the dresses, click on the picture to magically be transported to its home:

I love, love, love this dress and just may have to get it for myself.

Classic? After coveting t.b.a.'s S/S '11 collection all season long, and just missing out on my top-favorite ballerina dress on website after website (it kept selling out before my eyes), I decided to treat myself to my second-favorite dress from the collection - this one - when it finally went on sale on ASOS this summer. It was a bit of a splurge, but I'm glad I went for it because the dress is GORGEOUS, comfortable, and fits perfectly. It's also made of some of the nicest, softest silk I've ever felt. My one regret is that it's too short to wear for work.

Since it's a special dress, I saved it for a special occassion to wear it for the first time: my one year (paper!) anniversary with my husband. The weather was perfect, especially for late September. We went for brunch buffet at the Roycroft, which is not-so-coincidentally where we got married (followed by a brunch reception!), and were able to eat outside on their beautiful porch. Brunch comes with a complimentary beverage there - I love when that happens! I also love when my drink unintentionally matches my outfit:

Mmm, poinsettia.

We also explored their stunning gardens, where the flowers were still in full bloom:

Then we went back home and I posed to the maxx. How about a closeup of those cute, sheer insets at the shoulder and collar?

Oh, and the shoes!

I wore this outfit to work last week. Ugh, work - boring! Not an exotic locale for an outfit debut at all. This look is pretty exciting to me though, because it's full of my favorite designer labels purchased at a supreme bargain (also because I think it's pretty, duh).

My mom found the top at Filene's (or was it Filene's Basement?) several years ago. The price tag proclaimed it was Prada, though the inner tag just says "Made in Italy." A little odd, especially since Filene's has a great reputation, one that is not associated with selling counterfeits or misrepresenting designers. Regardless, the top was cute and cheap so she picked it up (originally for herself, though she ended up giving it to me - thanks, Mom!). I don't suppose anyone out there recognizes it, do they?

The no-name cardi was purchased for my high school graduation, erm, over 10 years ago! It's made of knitted plastic, which adds textural interest to any outfit, but I don't wear it much because it doesn't breathe.

The spectators? Ferragamos I found on ebay several years ago for a mere $10! Including the box! Barely worn! They are some of my nicest shoes.

The skirt is the most exciting to me. I am a huge, huge Marni fan and that label is way, way out of my budget, even at 70% off or more on discount sites. I had my eye on this skirt in particular for months, swooning over it every time I saw it on The Outnet or similar. A couple of weeks ago Gilt had a final sale, and there was the skirt, one left in my size, at a price I could actually afford!!!! And now it is mine and I love it. I can't wait to wear it with short-sleeved vintage cashmere sweaters in the fall! Oh, that's soon!

So that's my extra long-winded Bargain Bounty Hunter story. I'd love to know your favorite clothing coup, sale swoop, what have you! Please leave them in the comments, and thanks very much! <3

Cami: Prada????? we'll never know!!!!
Skirt: Marni!!!!!! OMG OMG OMG

I've just gotta show off this perfect little lace jacket that my sister gave to me for my birthday last month. She found it at an estate sale. It is so delicate, and has a perfect little peter pan collar and a wonderful boxy fit. I'm pretty sure it's from the 60s! I wore this to work a couple of weeks ago and felt super fancy.

I also experimented with dark nail polish. I think it counteracted the sweetness of the lace quite nicely. It's almost edgy - and I say "almost" because I figured out a long time ago that I just can't do edgy at all. Or witchy. Or cool. But I'm fine with girly, sweet, and dorky! Work whatcha got!

Another dress that's going to be difficult to let go of. I could not stop twirling in this thing! It's a late 50s chiffon party dress from the legendary Suzy Perette label. This baby will do heavy duty in some lucky girl's wardrobe. Very classic Audrey/Grace; it will never, ever go out of style. I'm tempted to keep it even though the waist is too small - I can suck it in!

This is the last dress I'll be selling for a little while, or at least until the weather gets nice again and the weekends calm down enough to shoot more looks. Thanks for sticking with me through this little etsy-listing-as-outfit-post experiment. There didn't seem to be much interest in it, so I think I'll do something else to show my listings in the future. The last thing I want to do is spam anyone, and that certainly wasn't my intention here.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend! I'll be back soon with a not-for-sale, I-really-wore-this outfit post!

I love this dress; the collar is so fun and unusual! It was purchased for myself from an ebay seller whose measurements were waaaaaaay off; I hate when that happens.

It's somewhat demure in front, but has the sexiest plunging back.
What do you think of my new haircut, by the way? I wasn't sure about it at first, but I'm liking it more and more. Pretty sure I'll be cutting it back into a pixie before long, though.

I wanted to share this little dress I just put up on Etsy. These are outtakes from the photo shoot we did; I liked the pictures so much that I wanted someplace to put them. I think, since my Etsy listings are rare, I might treat each one as a little outfit post here on the blog. Don't worry - if I ever start listing en masse, I'll either cease doing an outfit post for each look or just choose my very favorites here and there.

It breaks my heart a little bit that this doesn't fit. It's a little fitted sheath by Anne Fogarty (yep, the designer who penned Wife Dressing). I love the little purple flowers! And the piping! And its curviness! Sigh.

Oh, and I forgot to make a blog-sized photo of the back, which is really special. I hope you'll go to the Etsy listing to have a look!

Here we have another outfit that didn't translate to photos for whatever reason. I loved this ensemble, felt super confident and happy in it, got tons of compliments from complete strangers... then I saw the photos and was like, "Meh." Which sums up the internet response to the outfit so far as well (Chictopia, Wardrobe Remix, etc.) - and that's why these photos are over a month old and I'm just now getting around to posting them up on this little neglected blog. My confidence has taken a big dip lately when it comes to being in front of the camera, and I'm not really sure how to remedy that situation.

Sheepish confessional time! When I first joined Chictopia nearly a year ago, my outfits were consistently voted into the Style Gallery, which is rather difficult and something of an honor. It made me feel pretty good! However, lately, I'm lucky to get even just a few votes, if any at all. I'm not sure why I've let the opinions of strangers on the internet affect me in such a big way, but they have; I have to find a way to rise above them and get my groove back! Even if all my outfits are horrible misses in the public eye from here on out, what should matter is that I love what I wear, and that I document my personal sartorial (mis)adventures for me, not random anonymous approval. Easier said than done, but it's the reason why I'm going to try and keep trucking with Miss Hiccup's Vintage.
Have you ever let the internet's opinion of you/your style affect you in a negative way? How do you get out of a confidence or style rut?

We must have tried a million different poses, lighting and backdrops. I guess you can't win 'em all! I really like the sunflare in these pictures though, so these are the few that made the cut. I bought this amazing romper on sale from Bona Drag last winter, after coveting Rachel Antonoff's designs for what feels like forever, and I couldn't wait until it was warm enough to wear it. Also, it reminds me of a Busby Berkeley chorus girl, which is always awesome. A few weeks ago, I finally got my chance, and this is how I styled it to go eat chicken wings at Gabriel's Gate with Dave one evening. Perhaps silk wasn't the best choice for the occasion, as I had to wipe copious amounts of wing sauce from the patio chair at our table before sitting down, and I spent the rest of evening utterly terrified that I would spill something on myself (miraculously, I didn't). Still, the material felt great on a hot summer evening, and the blouse caught every little breeze - instant air conditioning!

Dave grabbed the camera and captured a stunning glamour shot of himself:

Also, a big welcome to my new followers! It’s incredibly difficult to source attractive vintage clothing with my specific measurements, and cute dresses are becoming more and more expensive – surely she wouldn’t be able to find anything in her price range, even if she found my size. I felt like I was asking her to find a needle in a haystack. But she delivered (and even said she had fun doing it, like she was dressing a doll)! This dress is absolutely perfect, and just what I was looking for: a fun print (I sorely lack prints in my wardrobe beyond polka dots), and a casual silhouette, perfect for a girl who buys way too many fancy 50s and 60s party dresses. Oh, and the dress is from the 70s, further diversifying my wardrobe.

I’d been dying all winter to wear this, and broke it out at the first hint of warm sun. I would probably never have picked this out for myself, but thanks to a fresh pair of eyes, I now have the PERFECT summer dress. The colors, print, and material are all too good. Thanks, sis!

On this particular, lazy-gorgeous day, we went to a coffee shop...

Isn't my husband cute?

...and lunched at one of our favorite local places, Bistro Europa. And it is still tights weather here in Buffalo... grrr. Anway, I wore this on Mother’s Day. In honor of my mom, I carried this amazing vintage house purse that was hers in the 60s. Each side is hand-painted with amazing detail – vines, flowers, birds in a birdcage, bricks, and a little sign with her name on it. I spent a lot of time admiring it as a child, and when she gave it to me a few years ago I was beyond thrilled. It’s delicate, so I only bust it out occasionally.

Also, I am very much in love with this new skirt! The knit detail along the bottom makes me really happy, and it’s surprisingly versatile. Actually, come to think of it, I'm wearing it now! This is what I wore for a lovely, perfect day walking, estate saling, dining, and gallery-going with my cute husband.

I bought this dress a couple of months ago from Lauren of Dear Golden, who very kindly answered a flurry of excited questions and put it on reserve for me after I saw a preview in one of her tweets. It's done up in a gorgeously sumptuous wool crepe (perfect for spring/fall transition weather), has pockets (yay!), and - best of all - is studded with teensy metal stars. They're not sewn on with no flimsy thread, either - the metal is studded right through the fabric. They're here to stay, and they mean business. It doesn't fit quiiiiiite right in the bust, but I'm kind of wearing it anyway. I mean, look at it. You would too.

Let's zoom in a little closer...

And how about even closer...

Yes, my friends. I was hoping to be happily updating this blog on a regular basis again by now, but persistently cold & rainy weather + dark skies = no photo ops! But I do have a couple of intriguing, post-worthy items up on ebay right now. If you've been reading this blog for a long time, you might remember my Lake & Stars obsession. Well, last year I was able to get my hands on the "Truce" camisole via Gilt Groupe, final sale, and it didn't fit!

It is just too dreamy, and I'm so sad it didn't work out. I'm offering it for half of what I paid for it, right here.

I also have this sweet, Edwardian/20's-inspired silk camisole from Guess! It's something I used to love, but no longer fits.

Only $9.99, right here.

Thanks for having a look!Aliciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01595398931669858850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978411828609251758.post-42420526475109678762011-04-05T14:46:00.000-07:002011-04-05T15:08:27.086-07:00Snooty poodle is very snooty.Remember how I told you that I have a weakness for kitsch? I wasn't kidding - I have so much more to show you! So very, very much more. One kitsch staple for which I have been hunting (for years!) is a poodle figurine. I like 'em a lot, and they are plentiful, but none of them have really SPOKEN to me, ya know? Until I met Snooty Poodle at an estate sale a couple of months ago.

Snooty Poodle is very smart; you can tell because she wears glasses. I think she might work in a library. She is also obviously quite fashionable, and takes pride in her pink organza ribbon and luxurious fur. She thinks she's better-dressed and more dignified than me.

Just look at her, judging me.

I realize that she was a questionable purchase at best, and more than a little bedraggled, but she only cost me a dollar. And the best part? She makes me smile every time I walk past her! That's worth more than a dollar and some embarrassment, yo!
Aliciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01595398931669858850noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978411828609251758.post-6410011972450603052011-03-22T06:49:00.000-07:002011-03-22T12:49:28.954-07:00Waiting for spring.
Buffalo has rather schizo weather each spring. A day or two here will be sunny and almost warm, and a day or three there will be cloudy and windy - maybe even snowy. I'm really looking forward to the warmer days ahead, when I can just throw on a lightweight dress and pair of sandals and call it a day. These photos are from Dave's cousin's wedding last July, when I employed just that sort of dressing technique. Here's hoping I can do it again soon!

The wedding was at the Botanical Gardens, which are beautiful. After the lovely ceremony, guests had the opportunity to wander the grounds before heading to the reception. Neither Dave nor I had been there in years, so we were glad for the chance to check it out and snap some totes awesome blog pix.

Dress: BCBG

Shoes: from my sister's wedding

Purse: vintage, 20s?

Scarf: vintage Vera, wool, great grandmother's

Photos by Dave.

I fell 100% in love with this oversized checkerboard.

Hideyhole.

View from hideyhole.

Shrimp plant! So when Dave and I saw a photo of this chair in a preview of a local estate sale, we both flipped. The estate was that of a lady who was an interior designer in the 60s, and she had sooooo many amazing pieces that I would love to own, but this was the one that we both set our hearts on (as well as being the only thing in our price range). It reminds me of something that should be on the set of a 60s Italian horror film, straight out of any of Mario Bava's Technicolor sixties-does-Victorian giallo flicks or even Suspiria (my all-time favorite spooky movie)! Or maybe a Fellini film, like Juliet of the Spirits.

We debated leaving it there and going back another day later in the sale to see if the price dropped, but after watching other folks' reactions to it we knew we'd have some pretty stiff competition and there'd be no way it would still be around. After some hemming and hawing about the price on my part, we took it home! Dave said to regard it as an art piece. I like buying art.

I so wish I could've met the lady who originally owned this. Walking around her home, you really got a feel for her sense of style, and it was so in line with my own that I think we could've found plenty to gab about. When Dave spoke to her caretaker, she told us that the woman attached the rhinestones herself, then placed the chair directly across the entryway so "you'd walk into the room and the first thing you'd see is those eyes glinting in the light and staring back at you." That sounds exactly like something I would do!! We also think she painted and upholstered the chair herself, refurbishing an old piece. I should mention here that she had respect for history and antiques, as she was a board member of the local historical society and decorated the Teddy Roosevelt Inaugural Site in Buffalo.

Dave's best angry cherub impression. As you may or may not know, I rarely have discount sales in my etsy store. However, I'm in a position where I could really use a few extra dolla dolla bills right now, so I've decided to hold an impromptu sale for my lovely blog-readers and twitter followers, likely for today only. If there's anything you've had your eye on in the shop, now's the time to buy! For a lush 20% off, please redeem coupon code: IMPULSE.

And thanks!Aliciahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01595398931669858850noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978411828609251758.post-25484343504088298402011-01-10T10:11:00.000-08:002011-01-10T12:00:32.559-08:00Meet the Girlies!Well, hello all! Long time, no blog. I hope everyone's holidays were as wonderful as mine; I'm a lucky girl, indeed. I've also been having fun reading everyone's New Year's goals/resolutions. Here are a few of mine, in no particular order:

1.) Blog more regularly! I fell out of the habit, hard. I work in snowy, cold downtown Buffalo and one of my job duties is to make hand deliveries to various law offices and courthouses. I need to dress for warmth, comfort, and practicality. I still make an effort to be somewhat stylish, but it's difficult to photograph outfits indoors, and I'm not one of those girls who's willing to prance around for outfit photos in the wind and snow. Thus, I'm going to try to take my blog in a different direction for the winter and showcase my style in other ways. I'll be sharing photos from around my home, showing estate sale finds, and maybe posting some inspiration. Perhaps I'll find a way to sneak in a few outfits here and there, too, who knows? But I definitely want to get back in the blogging habit.

2.) Buy a house with Dave (fingers crossed)! MAIN GOAL OF THE YEAR

3.) Make fewer impulse purchases. Only buy what I really love, not just something kinda cute that happens to be on sale. Save to buy special, quality things; the time it'll take to save the money will also force me to take extra time to consider whether or not I really love/need the particular item. (At the top of my wishlist: a pair of black leather Repetto BB ballet flats, the red shorts or red dress from Rachel Antonoff's new S/S '11 collection, anything from Karla Spetic, and one of these Samantha Pleet pieces - not that I'll buy all or even any of these things! It's just a wishlist.)

4.) Work harder to grow my etsy store.

5.) Maybe travel, although it might be hard while saving up for the house. If Dave & I can make it to Disney World this summer for a week with my sisters and their significant others, I'll be a happy girl. But I wouldn't mind going to Paris, either!

In keeping with goal #1, I'd like to share some things I found in an antique store way back in September...

Meet the Girlies!!

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27417985@N02/5343060339/" title=""The Girlies" - Blonde by minicrush, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5242/5343060339_c70ed6a34a_b.jpg" width="600" height="666" alt=""The Girlies" - Blonde" />

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27417985@N02/5343669474/" title=""The Girlies" - Brunette by minicrush, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5242/5343669474_4b059e8d56_b.jpg" width="600" height="734" alt=""The Girlies" - Brunette" />

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27417985@N02/5343060389/" title=""The Girlies" - Redhead by minicrush, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5010/5343060389_7efec1f5d6_z.jpg" width="600" height="640" alt=""The Girlies" - Redhead" />

Aren't they wonderful?
